STEPS TOWARDS
THE SACRED. From the Ethnology of Romanian Food Habits. Translation
from Romanian by Sorana Georgescu-Gorjan, The Romanian Cultural
Foundation Publishing House/The Encyclopaedic Publishing House, Bucharest,
1999, 198 p.
A senior researcher in the "C.
Brailoiu" Institute of Ethnography and Folklore in Bucharest, Ofelia Vaduva
studied popular food habits, pursuits, customs and contemporary artistic
hadicrafts. This book deals with the ritual practices where food hold pride
of place, and may be considered attempts at reaching the sacred, exceeding
religious experience and entering man's everyday life. At the same
time, they may be perceived as small steps on an imaginary road, towards
the pure and mysterious world of the deities and forebears, in order to
get acquainted with their intentions and to propitiate them.

VLAD THE
IMPALER (DRACULA). Translated by Ioana Voia. The Romanian Cultural
Foundation Publishing House, Bucharest, 1999, 298 p.
Vlad the Impaler`s legendary
aura is probably due to the fact that no other Romanian voivode was ever
faced with circumstances so extrordinary, when the Turkish Empire rising
on the ruins of the millenary Byzantine Empire was not yet perceived as
a balance factor of European politics. Ruler of Wallachia between 1456
and 1462, he would find himself caught between two worlds at clash.
The first issue of the present monograph came out of press in 1976, to
mark five hundred years since the departure of Voivode Vlad the Impaler.

Dorin Tudoran
VIITORUL
FACULTATIV. Poezii alese / OPTIONAL FUTURE. Selected poems. Translated
by Marcel Cornis-Pop. Preface by Ion Bogdan Lefter, The Romanian Cultural
Foundation Publishing House, Bucharest, 1999, 206 p.
At first sight, the sarcasm
of Dorin Tudoran's poems is ice-cold an icy itself; on the contrary,
it is dramatic, pathetic and ardent. Always cerebral, always an "intellectualist",
Tudoran has never ceased to be the "revolted man" in the line of Camus.
The "coldness" in his verse has the intense vibration of great poetry.

Ieronim, Mihnea Mircan, and Cosana Nicolae, The Romanian Cultural Foundation
Publishing House, Bucharest, 1999, 273 p.

COSMOS
vs. CHAOS. Myth and magic in Romanian Traditional Culture. A
comparative approach. Illustrated edition.. Translated from Romanian by
Mirela Adascalitei, The Romanian Cultural Foundation Publishing House,
Bucharest, 1999, 241 p. + ill.

The book represents an attempt
to reconstruct a pre- and proto-Romanian mythology. The author considers
several mythic themes and motifs ("Stealing of the Stars", "The Romanian
Legend of the Flood", "The Language of Angels" etc) that have so far been
given little or no attention or have been dealt with from different points
of view. These aspects of Romanian ethnic mythology are considered
in an universal context, without using the tools of mechanical comparativism.

TARA MEA,
LIMBA MEA. Zece poeti romani / MY COUNTRY, MY LANGUAGE. Ten Romanian
Poets. Translated by Eveline L. Kanes and Mihai Zaharia, The Romanian Cultural
Foundation Publishing House, Bucharest, 1999, 182 p.

Several of these poets have
previously been selectively translated and published in this country. But
this is the first time that work by this particular group, who wrote under
such duress, has been assembled in one volume. With the exception of of
Anatol E. Baconski and Nichita Stanescu, they lived to witness their country`s
struggle to return to normality after 1989, and certainly all of them have
remained at the forefront of Romanian literature.

LITERATURE
AND PROPAGANDA IN COMMUNIST ROMANIA. English version by Mihai Codreanu,
The Romanian Cultural Foundation Publishing House, Bucharest,1999, 127
p.

The main thesis of the author,
an outstanding Romanian critic, is that nothing can be explained naturally
in a literature which comes into existence under the pressures of a totalitarian
government. Directly or indirectly, everything has to be regarded as a
response, a reaction, a desperate or skilful defence-survival device.

POWER, PLAY
AND NATIONAL IDENTITY. Politics of Modernization in Central and East-European
Architecture. The Romanian File. Translated from Romanian by Stela Tinney,
The Romanian CulturalFoundation Publishing House, Bucharest, 1999, 261
p.
This book is the result
of the author's older preoccupation with putting the problems of
Romanian architecture in their proper context from a two-fold perspective.
First, the book is about projecting them against the ampler backdrop
of the architecture of their own time and place; secondly, it is about
infusing contemporary methods of research in an area which, more than others,
shows the wear of traditional modes of interrogating the object.

SAVORY
ROMANIAN DISHES AND CHOICE WINES, The Romanian Cultural Foundation
Publishing House, Bucharest, 1999, 127 p.
The present edition is very
close to the 1939 original in order to bring to life not just the recipes,
but also to provide a glimpse of Romanian society at that time. The book
offers the most authentic Romanian recipes, yet some cooking styles such
as cooking with fat or lard have changed over time. Recipes which in 1939
called for the use of fat or lard and fat meats were replaced in this revised
edition with oil and leaner types of meat.
